China:

『本草綱目』に収載されている。茎の煎じ汁については、少なくとも宋時代から、粘剤として言及がある。Actinidia chinensisの使用については、『癸辛雑識』（周密著。13世紀中頃刊行）に記載がある。

明朝では、『物理小識』（方以智著。1643年）など、多数の言及がある。

Morus alba は高さが20メートルにまで達する落葉樹（一部の熱帯地域では常緑）である。成長は若い間は速く、その後、遅くなる。挿し木で増える。春から夏に開花。かなり強い植物で、干ばつによく耐える。

ラテックスを分泌し、実は食用可。

実、根、樹皮は伝統医薬で使われ、根皮には駆虫効果がある。

根、葉、樹皮は染色に使われる。葉はルチン（フラボノール）を含み、木質と樹皮はさまざまなフラボン（ムルベリン、ムルベロクロメン、シクロムルベリンなど）を含む。

樹皮からは製紙用の繊維と織物用の繊維がとれる。

Morus albaは1000年間、インド、アフガニスタン、イランからヨーロッパ南部までの地域で、カイコの餌として広く栽培され、現在、世界中で栽培されている。

最初は中国北部の固有種であったが、現在は中国全土で栽培されている。この伝統的な木は、特に浙江省と江蘇省で、養蚕のために植えられる。養蚕は4000年以上前に中国で始まった。

China:

クワ科で樹皮を利用する樹種の性質については情報が混乱している。中国でクワを表す3つの語（Ku Chou Kou ）は発音がよく似ており、木の外見も似ているため、混同された。中国のさまざまな資料によれば、Morus albaとBroussonetia papyriferaの両方の樹皮が製紙に使われていた。

Morus albaの樹皮の表面にはしわがある。繊維は長く、非常に分離しにくい。このため、原料の処理に、Broussonetia papyriferaとBroussonetia kazinokiよりも時間がかかる。後の2種の樹皮の方がよく使われたのは、それが原因かもしれない。

Pan Jixingによれば、これらの繊維は魏（220～265年）の時代から製紙に使われている。

マグワから作られる紙は、晋（265～420年）と唐（618～907年）の時代に、書の台紙としてよく使われた。敦煌の多くの古文書には、ch'uの樹皮を原料とする紙が使われた。

明王朝（1368～1644年）の歴史書によれば、紙幣用の紙を作るために、クワ（sang pi）で繊維（sang jang）に緑の色をつけていた。この紙は厚く、なめらかで、浙江で製造され、養蚕農家がカイコの卵を保存するために使用した。

Japan:

大町市（中部地方長野県）周辺は最大の養蚕地域の一つであり、桑紙の製造が盛んであった。製紙業者は養蚕に関係する種々の紙（繭を育てるための袋、卵を入れる袋）を製造していた。

コウゾの収穫量が少ない年は、クワをコウゾに混ぜて使っていた。

Korea:

朝鮮時代（1392～1910年）に、樹皮をコウゾ繊維と混合して使用していた。根は黄色の染料として使われていた。

Preparation process for making paper

China:

春に収穫する。樹皮は木から直接はぎ取るか、または枝を束にして蒸す。蒸すか、または蓋をした釜に入れて沸騰した湯で煮た後、樹皮をはぎ取る。次に、樹皮を日に干すか、または発酵させる。前者の場合、数日間、アルカリ性溶液（灰汁）中で煮て、不純物を取り除く。発酵を利用する場合は、樹皮を水に浸して数日間発酵させる。次に、水で洗い、茶色の樹皮をナイフで削る。その後、数週間、石灰水に浸ける。その後、さらに洗う。

漂白は、7～11週間、樹皮を日に干し、水を吹きつけて行う。

次に、樹皮をさまざまな方法で砕く。たとえば臼と杵やはねハンマー（足こぎハンマーか水力式のハンマー）を使い、石の上で叩解するか、木槌や木の棒で叩解するか、動物が引く臼で砕く。

抄紙の前に、発酵したパルプに分散剤を加える。

抄紙にはいくつかの方法を使う。目的の紙の厚さにより量を加減して流し入れる。シートを重ねて一晩寝かせた後、重しを載せるか、またはプレスを使って圧搾する。その後、熱した壁か熱していない壁に置いて乾かす。

Japan:

収穫は11月、12月の落葉の時期に始まる。枝を長さ1メートルにそろえて切り、束を作る。樹皮をはがしやすくするために、束を2～3時間、蒸す。この段階の皮は、貯蔵前に取り除く外層の色から「黒皮」と呼ばれる。この部分は削り取る。

次に、樹皮を洗浄し、ラックに掛けて乾燥させる。2～3年の貯蔵後に、樹皮は紙を作るために適した状態になる。

煮る前に皮を漂白するために、冷たい川の水に樹皮を浸けるか雪上に置いて、日にさらす。アルカリ性溶液中で煮ることにより、叩解中に繊維を分離しにくくするリグニン、ペクチン、ガム、ワックスを除去できる。アルカリ性溶液は木灰またはアルカリ性化学物質（水酸化ナトリウムまたは石灰）である。約2時間煮るが、皮の古さと使用するアルカリの種類により、時間は変わる。煮沸後、皮を洗浄して残ったアルカリを除去する。不純物は冷水中で、手で洗って除去する。

次に、パルプを槌か棒を使って手で叩くか、なぎなたビーターと呼ばれる日本製ホランダー叩解機で叩く。

水を張った木の槽にパルプを注ぎ入れ、分散剤を加え、木製の熊手を使って強く攪拌する。

抄紙には、流し漉きと溜め漉きの2種類がある。溜め漉き法では、必要なパルプ全量を一度に取ってシートを形成する。流し漉き法では、目的の厚みになるまで繊維の層を重ねて作る。

シートは印をつけた板に1枚ずつ寝かせる。圧搾後にはがしやすくするために、間に何か（糸、茎）を挟む場合がある。圧搾は紙に重しを載せるか、またはレバープレスを使って行う。圧搾は1日の作業の最後に行われ、普通、一晩行う。乾燥させるために、屋外か屋内に置いた木の板の上に、刷毛で貼り付ける。現在は、加熱した金属板も使われる。

最後に、シートを並べ、通常、ナイフを使い、テンプレートに合わせて形を整える。

Morus australis est un arbre à feuilles caduques pouvant atteindre 10-15 m de hauteur. Il fleurit entre mars et mai. Il préfère un sol limoneux bien drainé, au soleil, mais il peut s’accommoder de divers types de sols et pousser dans la demi-ombre.

Le fruit, l'écorce, la feuille et la racine ont des propriétés médicinales. Les fruits sont comestibles. Ils contiennent des anthocyanines qui sont des pigments. Les couleurs varient de l'orange, rouge, violet, au noir et bleu. Les anthocyanines sont solubles dans l'eau et facilement extractibles.

Wikstroemia canescensは44属500種近くで構成されるジンチョウゲ科の低木である。アオガンピ属、ステレラ属、ミツマタ属、ジンチョウゲ属の種は形態が酷似しているため、混同しやすい。

ジンチョウゲ科はヒマラヤ山麓原産の製紙の基本となる植物である。これらの植物は樹皮に大量のヘミセルロースを含むことにより珍重される。また、漢方薬でもよく使われる。

Wikstroemia canescensは1.5～2 mの落葉低木で、6月から9月に、芳香がある黄色の花をつける。咳止めの効能があるとして、薬としても使われる。

雲南省には14種のアオガンピ属の植物が自生し、その内6種が北西部に分布する（W. delavayi、W. leptophylla、W. canescens、W. lichiangensis、W. scytophylla、W. lamatsoensis）。

ナシ族がトンパ紙の製造に使用するのはW. delavayi、W. leptophylla、W. canescens、W. lichiangensis、W. scytophylla、W. lamatsoensis のみである。

この紙はトンパ（Dongba）文化発祥の地といわれる村（シャングリラ県白水台（Baishuitai））の名にちなみ、「Baidi」とも呼ばれる。

伝承によれば、ナシ族による紙の生産は元王朝時代（1280～1368年）と言われるが、トンパ文字で書かれた最初の文は1668年のものである。

Preparation process for making paper

China:

3月から5月に収穫する。雨期の前であるが湿度が高く、樹皮をむきやすいためである。同じ低木から2～3年ごとに切る。成熟した枝のみを切り落とす。次に、樹皮をむき、束にまとめ、ラックに掛けて3～5日間、日に干す。使用時まで貯蔵する。

樹皮は槽内で3～5日間水に浸す。次に、1時間揉み、黒い樹皮を分ける。師部のみを残すために、色の濃い樹皮と木部（死んだ細胞）は除去する。

最後に、樹皮を水道水で洗う。

マツ（Pinus yunnanensis）の灰汁の中で3～4時間煮た後、繊維を水道水で洗う。

繊維を木の臼の中で、すりこぎを使ってすりつぶす。ペースト状になったものを木の台の上で叩く。

ペーストを混ぜ、望ましいシートのサイズに合った大きさの球を作る。

球を樋に入れて希釈した後、ペーストを紙の型に流し込む。

紙の型は、固い取り外せる竹のマットを底に敷き、高い囲み板をつけた型である。

底を取り外してシートを型から取り出し、乾燥させるための板の上に置く。

シートが半ば乾いた時点で、紙の表面を石か布で磨く。
