Welcome to Khartasia

The research undertaken in 2010 at CRCC (Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation des Collections) on Asian papers continues with new funding from the Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

The paper identification device comprises on one hand the analysis of the basic paper elements and one the other hand the development of a descriptive guide for documents or artworks.

The originality of the study is based on a combination of skills from both the humanities and the sciences.

Currently the study focused on three Far Eastern countries producers of paper for a long time, China, Korea and Japan.

What is Khartasia ?

China

The database Khartasia combines historical and technological information on components of the papermaking plants, papermaking manufacturing, paper names and characteristics of papermaking fibers. The information comes from literature surveys carried out in collaboration with partner institutions in China, Korea and Japan.

A search tool

The database Khartasia is intended primarily for conservators, curators, historians and archaeologists. The tools it provides will guide the user in identifying the constituent materials of the collections from Asia and also the Western works made on Oriental paper
