Plant cultivation and use

Boehmerias form one of the genera of the Urticaceae family; the genus includes one hundred species. There are about 65 tropical or subtropical species of which 6 are endemic in China. These are flowering plants, but unlike other members of the same family, genus bears no stinging hairs.

Boehmeria nivea or white ramie or is a large perennial herb. It spreads by fragmentation of rhizomes. The stems reach 2 to 3m high. The plant likes sandy and well drained soils.

The plant is cultivated for its resistant bast fibers. It is possible to obtain 2-4 harvests per year depending on the climate of the region.

Its fibers are shorter than those of hemp, but they are very strong in the manufacture of ropes and nets. The longest fibers are reserved for the textile industry while the shortest are for paper manufacturing.

This is one of the oldest textile plants because its use would have started more than 6000 years ago (it was used in the manufacture of strips for the preparation of mummies in Egypt).

However, the fibers are difficult to extract from the plant. Indeed, it is difficult to peel them in tow because they are very embedded with gums.

The fibers are difficult to dye due to high molecular crystallinity. They have a shiny appearance that made them qualify as silk plant.

The other species appreciated for textiles, is the green ramie (Boehmeria utilis, Boehmeria tenacissima), which is also cultivated in China.

Ramie has medical uses in particular it is febrifuge. Leaves and roots are also eaten.
Boehmeria nivea can also be grown as forage plant.

China:

The cultivation of ramie is reflected in China over 3000 years. The documents refer mainly to its culture as a textile plant. It grew around in the wild in China, especially in north and west areas, such as flax, hemp, jute. All these plants are called “ma” in old Chinese documents.

According to Ying-Hsing in « Tiangong kaiwu » or « Creations of nature and work of man » (circa 1600-1660) there are two varieties, green and yellow. Stems can be harvested two or three times a year. The fiber is different from flax, hemp and jute as it is covered with pectin, which is not easy to remove by bacterial action.

The process of elimination of pectin to get the fiber, is described by Lu Chi in the "Shih Ching" from the 3rd century: Remove the bark with a bamboo or iron knife; boil the internal fibers. This textile is used as furnishing textile throughout southern China.

The process of elimination of pectin was not well known in northern China that is why the clothes made with ramie were produced and worn especially in the south. They are known to be light for summer and are worn by the common people. It also used to make curtains, mosquito nets.
The Mongolian government in the13th century tried to introduce its culture in northern China but without success because the ramie does not grow well in the north, too dry. It survived in the south to the development of cotton cultivation. In the 19th century there is a flourishing trade in Canton for export to Europe.

Ramie is one of the oldest fibers used in China in the manufacture of paper. From the Tang Dynasty (618-907), there is a strong demand for hemp textiles; hemp reserved for textiles use, will be progressively replaced by ramie in the manufacture of paper. Its use will disappear at the end of the dynasty.

Japan:

It was mainly used as a textile plant in particular in the production of a very fine fabric called Miyako-Jōfu from the Miyako-jima Islands (Okinawa Prefecture). The fabric allows making clothes well adapted to local climatic conditions.

Korea:

It has rarely been used in Korea as a paper plant but mainly as a textile plant.

Preparation process for making paper

China:

Harvesting is made when stems turn to brown. The leaves are removed from the stems, the stems are steamed and the fibres stripped off. This inside bark is dried to avoid rotting.

The fibres are cooked for 2 hours with lye (fresh material might require longer cooking). They are then beaten in a Hollander beater.

There are around thirty wild species and many hybrids developed in many areas, but the main species (diploid) are Gossypium herbaceum L. (var. typicum, or frutescens, or africanum), Gossypium arboreum L. (var. typicum, or neglectum, or cernuum).

The cultivated species (triploid) are Gossypium barbadense L, Gossypium hirsutum L., Gossypium religiosum L.

The origin is uncertain. The Herbaceum was imported as domesticated species to Saudi and Syria and then to India, where Arboreum has developed from the Herbaceum. Then it prevailed in Africa and Asia. From these species a triploid has developed which replaced the two other ones.

Many archaeological evidences show that cotton was domesticated several thousand years before our Era and in regions far apart: 10.000 BC in Egypt, Mexico 7000 BC, from 2300 BC in India. However, it seems certain that it is from India that it has spread to Persia in the 4th century BC and to Malaysia, Indonesia, Southeast Asia and China.

Gossypium arboreum is a perennial shrub up to 1.50m in height; other species can be perennial herbs or shrubs.

The colors of the flowers vary depending on the species, from off-white to purple. The fruits are ovoid capsules which open at maturity in 3 to 5 valves containing 6 to 12 seeds covered with hair, white fibers which can be 2 to 5 cm in length depending on the variety.

There are two types of fibers: long fibers (lints), and shorter hairs (linters).

The seeds, after removal of the fibers can produce oil. The roots are used as decoctions in the Indian pharmacopoeia for the treatment of urinary diseases.

The fibers used for textiles and paper production come from the hairs of the seeds of one or an other species.

In the case of paper, fibers tend to come from rags, they are rarely used raw. But in this case, the linters or more rarely, lints are used.

The first attempts to use fibers directly from the plant began in the early 20th century in the modern industry. Linters are torn by special gins. The lints are treated with caustic soda and linters by caustic solutions and are bleached.

China:

Cotton has never been used as a major material in the manufacture of paper, probably because of its use in textiles. There is a paper called "cotton paper" (Mien chih) but it is made from paper mulberry.

Cotton clothes are admired under the Tang’s (618-907), but the cultivation of cotton settles later. At that time, the calicos and muslins were imported by Chinese merchants from India to the warehouse of Palembang in Indonesia. From there, the culture has developed in Indochina.

It would be ambassadors from Indochina who presented to Emperor cottonseed as a tribute. The cultivation of cotton was slow to spread throughout China. However texts from the Tang period mention the cultivation in the south of a plant called Ku pei or Chi pei or cotton.

Culture really starts in the Song dynasty (960-1279) provided by two routes:

The south, from Indochina to Guangdong, Fujian.

The west to Gansu and Shanxi, through Turkestan. It is the variety Herbaceum that will not exceed the north boarders. The other will spread everywhere and quickly.

At the end of the 13th century, cotton has come to Chang Jiang (Yangzi River or blue River) and becomes a real industry.

As the culture takes a lot of water, it is planted in rotation with rice in the south and wheat in the north.

In the late Ming (1368-1644) it is the most important crop in the delta of the Chang Jiang.

Japan:

Cotton has been used in Japon since the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Korea:

From the Joseon period (1392-1910), raw materials traditionally used for paper production, mainly bark of Broussonetias begin to fail. Papermakers face to a growing demand for paper stimulated by the development of publications initiated during the Goryeo period (907-1392). Other plants will be used to provide a fiber supplement such as wisteria, rice, oat and barley straws, bamboo, jute, cotton and hemp but also willow leaves, reeds, the bark and needles of pine.

In Korea, stem is also used.

Preparation process for making paper

Cotton tree bears flowers and fruits at the same time, so harvesting lasts several months when the fruit is ripe: the capsules burst and release the fibers which are torn.

Cotton is dried in the air for several days. The long fibers are separated from the seeds and waste and will then go through a further cleaning. The short fibers are collected with gins.

Biennial or perennial herb up to 2 to 3m high, cultivated as an ornamental. It is in flower from July to September. The flowers have colors ranging from white through pink and dark red to black.The purple flowers provide purple and blue-violet dyes.

The dying components are anthocyanidols: cyanidol, delphinidol, malvidin. The leaves contain a green dye and the flowers, a red one.

The dye was used to dye silk, wool, cotton and hides.

The roots and the flowers are used in Tibetan medicine: flowers and root are demulcent, diuretic and astringent.

The plant has also nutritional properties: the young leaves are eatable; a nutritious starch is obtained from the root and a tea is made from the flower petals.

China:

It is mainly used for its medicinal properties. It is used to dye ceremony papers and cards of scholars.

Japan:

Used as dye for fabrics.

Korea:

Used as dye for fabrics.

Preparation process for making paper

Using alum and tartar mordants allow a range of colors from blue to purple. Iron gives very dark red, almost black.

China:

The flowers are harvested when they are opened and are dried for later use. The dye is extracted from the petals. The petals can be used either fresh or dried.

Japan:

Dyeing is performed in two ways: pulp dyeing (sukizome) or sheet dyeing (hitashizome by dipping or hikizome by brushing).

To dye paper by soaking, the sheets are plucked one by one between two wooden sticks by the small side. This will keep the sheet flat during soaking.

Korea:

The papers are dyed in three ways: dyeing of the pulp (Seonyeombeop), dyeing of the sheet by dipping, brushing and spraying (Huyeombeop ), combination of the both methods (Honyeombeop). Then the paper can be hammered.

Les Boehmeria forment l’un des genres de la famille des Urticacées ; le genre comprend une centaine d'espèces. Il existe environ 65 espèces tropicales ou subtropicales dont 6 sont endémiques en Chine.

Ce sont des plantes à fleurs mais contrairement à d'autres membres de la même famille, le genre ne porte pas de poils urticants.

La Boehmeria nivea ou ramie blanche est une grande herbe vivace. Elle se multiplie par fragmentation des rhizomes. Les tiges atteignent 2 à 3m de hauteur. La plante apprécie les sols sablonneux et bien drainés.

La plante est cultivée pour ses fibres libériennes résistantes. Il est possible d’obtenir 2 à 4 récoltes par an suivant le climat de la région.

Ses fibres sont moins longues que celles du chanvre mais elles sont très solides pour la fabrication des cordes et filets. Les fibres les plus longues sont réservées à l’industrie textile tandis que les plus courtes servent dans la fabrication du papier.

C’est l’une des plus anciennes plantes textiles car son utilisation aurait débuté il y a plus de 6000 ans (elle a été utilisée dans la confection des bandelettes destinées à la préparation des momies en Egypte). Cependant les fibres sont difficiles à extraire de la plante. En effet, il est difficile de décortiquer les tiges en filasse car elles sont très incrustées de gommes.

Les fibres se teignent mal à cause d’une forte cristallinité moléculaire. Elles ont un aspect brillant qui les a faites qualifier de soie végétale.

L’autre espèce textile appréciée est la ramie verte (Boehmeria utilis, Boehmeria tenacissima) qui est également cultivée en Chine.

La ramie a des usages médicaux en particulier fébrifuge. Ses feuilles et ses racines sont également consommées.

Boehmeria nivea peut être aussi cultivée comme plante fourragère.

China:

La culture de la ramie est attestée en Chine il y a plus de 3000 ans. Les documents font mention surtout de sa culture comme plante textile. Elle y poussait partout à l’état sauvage et plus particulièrement dans les régions nord et ouest, comme le lin, le chanvre, le jute. Toutes ces plantes sont appelées « ma » dans les documents anciens chinois.

Selon Song Yingxing dans le « Tiangong kaiwu » ou « Créations de la nature et du travail de l’homme » (vers 1600-1660), il en existe deux variétés, verte et jaune. On peut récolter les tiges deux ou trois fois par an. La fibre est différente du lin, chanvre et jute car elle est couverte de pectine qui n’est pas facile à éliminer par action bactérienne. Le procédé d’élimination de la pectine afin d’obtenir les fibres est décrit par Lu Chi dans le « Shih Ching » texte du 3^e siècle : Enlever l’écorce avec un couteau de bambou ou de fer ; faire bouillir les fibres internes. Ce textile est utilisé comme textile d’ameublement dans tout le sud de la Chine.

Le procédé d’élimination de la pectine était mal connu dans le nord de la Chine, c’est pourquoi les vêtements de ramie furent produits et portés surtout dans le sud du pays. Ils ont la réputation d’être légers pour l’été et sont portés par les gens du peuple. On fabriquait aussi des rideaux, des moustiquaires.

Le gouvernement mongol au13^e siècle a essayé d’introduire sa culture dans le nord de la Chine mais sans succès car la ramie pousse mal dans le nord trop sec. Elle a survécu dans le sud au développement de la culture du coton. Au 19^e siècle il existe un commerce florissant à Canton pour son exportation vers l’Europe.

La ramie est l’une des plus anciennes fibres utilisées en Chine dans la fabrication des papiers. A partir de la dynastie Tang(618-907), il existe une forte demande de chanvre pour les textiles ; le chanvre réservé à des usages textiles sera remplacé progressivement par la ramie dans la fabrication du papier. Son usage disparait à la fin de la dynastie.

Japan:

Elle a surtout été utilisée comme plante textile en particulier dans la confection d’un tissu très fin appelé Miyako-Jōfu, du nom des îles Miyako-jima (préfecture d’Okinawa). Le tissu permet de confectionner des vêtements bien adaptés aux conditions climatiques locales.

Korea:

Elle a rarement été utilisée en Corée comme plante papetière mais surtout comme plante textile.

China:

La récolte a lieu quand les tiges brunissent. Les feuilles sont éliminées et les tiges sont étuvées afin de décortiquer les fibres. Cette écorce interne est mise à sécher rapidement pour éviter son pourrissement.

Les fibres sont mises à cuire dans une lessive alcaline pendant 2 heures (ou plus si le matériau est frais). Elles sont ensuite raffinées dans une pile hollandaise.

Plante herbacée vivace ou bisannuelle pouvant atteindre 2 à 3m de hauteur, cultivée comme plante ornementale. La floraison a lieu de juillet à septembre. Les fleurs ont des couleurs allant du blanc, rose en passant par le rouge foncé et allant jusqu’au noir. Ce sont les fleurs pourpres qui fournissent des teintures violettes et bleu-violettes.

Les principes colorants sont des anthocyanidols: cyanidol, delphinidol, malvidol. Les feuilles donnent un colorant vert et les fleurs, un colorant rouge.

La teinture a été utilisée pour teindre les étoffes de soie, laine, coton ainsi que les peaux.

Les fleurs et les racines sont utilisées dans la médecine tibétaine : elles sont émollientes, diurétiques et astringentes.

La plante a également des qualités nutritives : les jeunes feuilles peuvent se consommer ; une farine nutritive est obtenue à partir de la racine ainsi qu’un thé à partir des pétales de fleurs.

Les mordançages à l’alun et au tartre permettent d’obtenir une gamme de couleur allant du bleu au violet. Le mordançage au fer donne des rouges très sombres, presque noirs.

China:

Les fleurs sont récoltées lorsqu’elles sont complètement ouvertes; elles sont séchées en attendant d’être utilisées. La teinture est extraite des pétales. Les pétales peuvent être utilisés soit frais soit séchés.

Japan:

La teinture des papiers se fait de deux façons : teinture de la pâte à papier (sukizome) ou de la feuille (hitashizome par trempage ou hikizome par brossage).

Pour teindre du papier par trempage, les feuilles sont pincées une à une entre deux plaquettes de bois par le petit coté. Cela permet de garder la feuille plate pendant le trempage.

Korea:

Dyeing is performed in two ways: pulp dyeing (sukizome) or sheet dyeing (hitashizome by dipping or hikizome by brushing).

To dye paper by soaking, the sheets are plucked one by one between two wooden sticks by the small side. This will keep the sheet flat during soaking.

カラムシ属はイラクサ科の属で、約100種で構成される。約65種が熱帯・亜熱帯に分布し、そのうち6種が中国の固有種である。顕花植物であるが、イラクサ科の他の植物と異なり、この属の植物には刺毛がない。

ナンバンカラムシ（Boehmeria nivea）は、丈の高い多年草である。地下茎の株分けにより増える。茎は2～3メートルまで成長する。排水性の良い砂地の土壌を好む。

丈夫な靭皮繊維を取るために栽培される。生育地の気候によっては、年に2～4回の収穫も可能である。

繊維は麻よりも短いが、非常に丈夫で、縄や網の製造に適している。長い繊維は織物業界で使われ、短い繊維は製紙業界で使われる。

6000年以上前から使われていたと考えられており（古代エジプトでミイラを包むための布の製造に使われていた）、世界で最も古くから織物の原料として使われていた植物の1種に数えられる。

しかし、この植物から繊維を抽出するのは困難である。樹脂の中に繊維が深く入り込んでいるため、引きはがすのが難しいためである。

また、分子の結晶化度が高いため、繊維を染めにくい。光沢があることから、「silk plant＝絹植物」と呼ばれていた。

解熱剤などの薬効も知られている。また、葉と根は食用にもなる。

Boehmeria nivea は飼料としても栽培される。

China:

カラムシの栽培は、中国で3000年にわたり続いている。記録では主に織物用の植物としての栽培が取り上げられている。カラムシは中国の特に北部と西部に、亜麻、麻、黄麻のように自生していた。中国の古書で、それらの植物はすべて「麻」と呼ばれている。

應星（1600年頃～1660年頃）によれば、緑と黄の2品種があった。茎は年に2～3回収穫できる。繊維はペクチンで覆われているためバクテリアの作用により除去できないという点で、亜麻、麻、黄麻とは異なる。

繊維を得るためのペクチン除去工程は、陸機の「詩経疏」（3世紀）の中で、次のように描写されている。「竹または鉄のナイフで樹皮をはぐ。内側の繊維を煮る。この織物は中国南部全域で室内装飾用織物として使われている」

中国北部ではペクチンの除去工程があまり知られていなかったため、カラムシで作られた服は特に南部で製造され、着用された。それは軽い夏服として、庶民が着用していた。また、カーテンや蚊帳の製造にも使われた。
　13世紀のモンゴル帝国政府は、この種の栽培を中国北部に導入しようとしたが、乾燥した北部ではカラムシの生育が悪く、失敗に終わった。

この植物の栽培は、南部では綿栽培が発達するまで続いた。19世紀には、広東でヨーロッパへの輸出が盛んになった。

カラムシは、製紙に使われる中国最古の繊維の1種に数えられる。

唐王朝（7～9世紀）から、麻の織物に対する需要が拡大した。麻が織物用に確保されたため、製紙では次第にカラムシが主流になった。麻の使用は唐王朝末期に終わった。

Japan:

主に織物用に使われ、特に沖縄県宮古島特産の宮古上布と呼ばれる極細の糸で織られた織物の生産に使われた。その織物により、現地の気候に合った服を作ることができる。

Korea:

韓国では製紙にはほとんど使われず、主に織物に使われる。

茎から葉を取り除き、茎を蒸し、繊維をはぎ取る。腐らないよう、内側の皮を乾燥させる。

Il existe une trentaine d'espèces sauvages et de nombreux hybrides créés dans les nombreuses régions de production mais les espèces principales (diploïdes) sont Gossypium herbaceum L. (var. typicum, ou frutescens, ou africanum),Gossypium arboreum L. (var. typicum, ou neglectum, ou cernuum).

Les espèces cultivées (triploïdes) sont Gossypium barbadense L., Gossypium hirsutum L.,Gossypium religiosum L.

Son origine est incertaine. L’Herbaceum est arrivé domestiqué en Arabie et Syrie puis en Inde où s’est développé l’Arboreum à partir du premier. Il a ensuite prédominé en Afrique et en Asie. De ces espèces s’est développé un triploïde qui a remplacé les deux autres.

De nombreuses preuves archéologiques montrent que le coton a été domestiqué plusieurs millénaires avant notre ère et dans des régions très éloignées les unes des autres : -10.000 en Egypte, -7000 au Mexique, en Inde dès -2300. Cependant il semble acquis que c’est depuis L’inde qu’il se serait répandu vers la Perse au 4^e siècle Av JC, puis en Malaisie, Indonésie, Asie du sud-est et en Chine.

Gossypium arboreum est un arbrisseau vivace pouvant atteindre 1m50 de hauteur ; les autres espèces peuvent être des herbes ou des arbustes vivaces.

Les fleurs sont de couleurs variées selon les espèces, variant du blanc ivoire au pourpre. Les fruits sont des capsules ovoïdes qui s’ouvrent à maturité en 3 à 5 valves contenant 6 à 12 graines couvertes de poils, fibres blanchâtres pouvant mesurer entre 2 et 5 cm de long selon les variétés.

On distingue deux types de fibres : les grandes fibres (lints), et les poils plus courts (linters).

Les graines, après le prélèvement des fibres peuvent produire de l'huile. Les racines sont utilisées sous forme de décoctions dans la pharmacopée indienne pour le traitement des maladies urinaires.

Les fibres utilisées pour le textile et la fabrication du papier proviennent des poils des graines de l’une ou l’autre des espèces de cotonniers.

Dans le cas du papier, les fibres proviennent en général de chiffons; elles sont rarement utilisées brutes. Mais dans ce dernier cas, ce sont les linters et plus rarement, les lints qui sont utilisés.

Les premiers essais pour employer des fibres directement depuis la plante ont démarré au début du 20^ème siècle dans l’industrie moderne. Les linters sont arrachés par des égreneuses spéciales.

Les lints sont traités par le procédé à la soude et les linters par des solutions caustiques et sont blanchis.

China:

Le Coton n’a jamais été utilisé comme un matériau majeur dans la fabrication du papier, sans doute à cause de son utilisation dans les textiles. Il existe un papier appelé « papier de coton » (Mien chih) mais c’est du papier de fibres de mûrier.

Les vêtements de coton sont admirés sous les Tang (618-907) mais la culture du coton s’installe plus tard. A cette époque, les calicots et mousselines étaient importés par les marchands chinois venus d’Inde vers l’entrepôt de Palembang en Indonésie. De là, la culture s’est développée en Indochine.

Ce serait des ambassadeurs venus d’Indochine qui aurait présenté à l’empereur des graines de coton sous forme de tribut. La culture du coton sera longue à s’implanter en Chine. Cependant des textes de l’époque Tang citent la culture au sud, d’une plante appelée Ku pei ou Chi pei ou coton.

La culture démarre vraiment sous les Song (960-1279) apportée par deux routes :

Le sud, depuis l’Indochine vers le Guangdong, le Fujian.

L’ouest, vers le Gansu et le Shanxi, à travers le Turkestan ; c’est la variété herbaceum qui ne dépassera pas les frontières nord. L’autre se répand partout et rapidement.

A la fin du 13^e siècle le coton est arrivé jusqu’au Chang Jiang (Yangzi ou fleuve bleu) et devient une vraie industrie.

Comme la culture demande beaucoup d’eau, il est planté en alternance avec le riz dans le sud et le blé dans le nord.

A la fin des Ming (1368-1644), c’est la culture la plus importante dans le delta du Chang Jiang.

Japan:

Le coton a été utilisé au Japon à partir de l’ère Meiji (1868-1912).

Korea:

A partir de la période Joseon (1392-1910), les matières premières traditionnellement utilisées pour produire le papier, essentiellement les écorces de Broussonetias, commencent à manquer. Les papetiers doivent faire face à une demande grandissante de papier stimulée par le développement des publications, engagé dès la période Goryeo (907-1392). D’autres plantes vont être utilisées pour fournir un complément de fibres comme la glycine, les pailles de riz, d’avoine et de d’orge, les bambous, le jute, le coton et le chanvre mais aussi les feuilles de saule, les roseaux, l’écorce et les aiguilles de pin.

En Corée, on utilise également la tige de la plante.

Le cotonnier porte fleurs et fruits en même temps ; ainsi la récolte dure plusieurs mois quand le fruit est à maturité : les capsules éclatent et libèrent les fibres qui sont arrachées.

Le coton est mis à sécher à l'air pendant quelques jours. Les fibres longues sont séparées des graines et des déchets puis elles subiront un nettoyage complémentaire. Les fibres courtes sont récupérées à l’aide d’égreneuses.
