Ulmus cavaleriei better known as Pteroceltis tatarinowii is a deciduous tree reaching to 20m height. It is in bloom from March to May. It adapts to different types of soils but prefers well-drained loamy soils.

It is grown for its fibres used in the manufacture of paper, its fine timber, and its seeds from which oil is extracted.

China:

This plant is the basic material to make Xuan paper which is produced in Jing County, Anhui Province. The paper is made from the fibers of the bark of blue sandalwood and rice straw. It is the mixture of the two types of fibers that gives to paper its qualities for painting and calligraphy, in particular the effect of incisive brushstrokes.

The quality depends on the proportions between the bark of sandalwood and the rice straw.

Xuan paper was first mentioned in ancient Chinese books such as "Li Dai Ming Hua Ji" or "Notes of Past Famous Paintings" dated mid 9th century and "Xīn Tángshū" or "New Book of Tang", edited by official scholars of the Song Dynasty, dated 1060.

Its manufacture in Jing County, dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Neighbouring cities such as Xuancheng and Taiping cities, were production centers for blue sandalwood grew there. The Jing county was under the jurisdiction of Xuanzhou Prefecture in the Tang Dynasty which gave it its name.

But by the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the paper industries in Huizhou, Chizhou and Xuanzhou were gradually transferred to Jing County since the raw materials were abundant there: Ulmus cavaleriei or Pteroceltis tatarinowii is an endemic species and the rice is grown on site. The climate with abundant rainfall provides a favourable environment for the growth of blue sandalwood and rice.

Originally, rice straw is added as a supplement to reduce the costs of raw materials. Other materials such as bamboo or mulberry will be also used during the Song and Yuan dynasties (1280-1368).

During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the paper industry grew rapidly developing numerous kinds of papers.

In the last years of the Qing Dynasty, Xuan paper manufacturing was already in decline and false Xuan papers began to be produced, using bleached bamboo fibers.

The famous famous Xuan paper is the "red star brand " named after a modern factory.

Japan:

This plant does not grow in Japan. The papers produced in Japan as senshi do not contain blue sandalwood but are made from rice straw and bamboo fibers. They are white, very smooth and they absorb ink well; as true Chinese Xuan papers they are devoted to calligraphy, painting and printing.

Preparation process for making paper

It is grown from cuttings. After two years, the branches are cut and tied in bundles which are steamed for several hours in order to peel the bark. Harvesting takes place in autumn or in early winter.
The bark is then retted for several months in water so that the dark outer bark can be easily removed from the white inner bark. The remains of the black bark are scraped to keep only the whitebark.
The bark is cooked in a weak alkaline solution (wood ash or sodium carbonate) and is then bleached in the sun (or recently using hypochlorite). It is then cooked again and again sun bleached. The bark is placed on the mountainside, on rocks or on the banks of rivers. This bleaching takes several months of exposure by turning the fiber bundles.

The straw pulp previously prepared (see rice or wheat straw) is added to the bark fibers and the whole is beaten in a Hollander beater, or in the past using a water beater.

As the sheets are large (70/140cm), they are manufactured by two workers. The stack of sheets is pressed in the late afternoon. The sheets are then dried on a heating surface.

Variation: The bark and the straw are soaked in a lime water bath for a few days and then cooked in a weak alkaline solution (wood ash or sodium carbonate).

Ulmus cavaleriei plus connu comme Pteroceltis tatarinowii est un arbre pouvant atteindre 20 m de haut, à feuilles caduques. Il fleurit de mars à mai. Il s’adapte à divers types de terrains mais préfère les sols limoneux et bien drainés.

Il est cultivé pour ses fibres utilisées en papeterie mais aussi pour son bois précieux et ses graines dont on tire une huile.

China:

Cette plante est la matière de base du papier Xuan qui est produit dans le comté de Jing, province de l’Anhui. Il est fabriqué à partir des fibres de l’écorce du santal vert et de paille de riz. C’est le mélange des deux types de fibres qui procure au papier ses qualités pour la peinture et la calligraphie, en particulier l’effet incisif des traits de pinceau.

La qualité dépend des proportions entre l’écorce de santal et la paille de riz.

Le papier Xuan est cité dans dans le "Li Dai Ming Hua Ji" ou “Remarques sur les peintures anciennes célèbres" datant du milieu du 9^e siècle, et le "Xīn Tángshū" ou "Nouveau livre des Tang", ouvrage rédigé par les érudits officiels de la dynastie Song, datant de 1060.

Sa fabrication dans le comté de Jing, remonterait à la dynastie Tang (618-907). Les villes alentours de Xuancheng et Taiping étaient les centres de production car le santal vert y poussait abondament. Le comté de Jing à l’époque Tang se trouvait sous le contrôle de la préfecture de Xuanzhou, qui lui a donné son nom. Mais progressivement sous les Song (960-1279), la fabrication du papier se déplace essentiellement vers dans le comté de Jing car les matières premières y sont abondantes : l’Ulmus cavaleriei ou Pteroceltis tatarinowii y est une espèce endémique et le riz est cultivé sur place. Le climat, avec d’abondantes précipitations fournit un environnement favorable à la croissance du santal vert et du riz. A l’origine, la paille de riz est ajoutée comme complément fibreux pour diminuer le coût des matières premières. D’autres matières comme le bambou ou le mûrier seront également utilisées durant les dynasties Song et Yuan (1280-1368).

Au cours de la dynastie Qing (1644-1911), l'industrie du papier Xuan se développe rapidement, créant diverses qualités de papier.

A la fin de la dynastie Qing, la production du papier Xuan est en déclin et l’on commence à produire de faux papiers Xuan en utilisant des fibres blanchies de bambou.

Le papier le plus connu est celui de la marque “étoile rouge” du nom d’une manufacture moderne.

Il est cultivé à partir de boutures. Après deux ans, les branches sont coupées et attachées en fagots qui sont étuvés pendant plusieurs heures afin de pouvoir détacher l’écorce. La récolte a lieu à l’automne ou au début de l’hiver.

L’écorce est ensuite rouie pendant plusieurs mois dans l’eau afin que l’écorce externe brune puisse être facilement éliminée de l’écorce interne blanche. Les restes de cette écorce noire sont grattés pour ne conserver que l’écorce blanche.

Les écorces sont cuites dans une solution faiblement alcaline (cendres de bois ou carbonate de sodium) puis sont ensuite blanchies au soleil (ou bien récemment à l’aide d’hypochlorite). Elles sont par la suite de nouveau cuites et de nouveau mises à blanchir. Les écorces sont placées à flanc de montagne, sur des rochers ou sur les bords des rivières. Ce blanchiment demande plusieurs mois d’exposition en retournant les paquets de fibres.

La pâte de paille préalablement préparée (voir pailles de riz ou de blé) est ajoutée aux fibres d’écorce et le tout est battu dans une pile hollandaise, ou autrefois dans un battoir hydraulique.

Les feuilles étant de grand format (70/140cm), elles sont fabriquées par deux ouvriers. La pile de feuille est pressée en fin de journée. Les feuilles sont ensuite séchées sur une surface chauffante.

Variante : Les écorces et la paille sont mises à tremper dans un bain d’eau de chaux pendant quelques jours puis sont cuites dans une solution faiblement alcaline (cendres de bois ou carbonate de sodium).
